Swifties are uniting to demand that Taylor dump her Eras Tour sponsor, the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), Canada’s #1 funder of fossil fuels!
This week, Swifties are taking bold, coordinated action to show RBC that they won’t put up with their toxic investments and their attempts to use Taylor Swift to polish their image. Between October 8th and October 13th, Swifties are postering, flyering, hosting teach-ins and art builds, writing letters to the editor, and much more!
RBC has dumped $256 billion USD into fossil fuels since the Paris Agreement was signed in 2016. They are also the primary funder of the Coastal GasLink pipeline, a fracked gas pipeline being pushed through unceded Wet’suwet’en territory without consent. RBC provides billions of dollars in financing for countless projects and companies that violate Indigenous rights from Uganda, to the Gulf Coast, to the Salish seas.
That’s why Swifties are demanding that RBC:
- Provide no new fossil fuel financing and commit to a rapid phase out of existing fossil fuel financing.Immediately stop financing new and expanding coal, oil, and gas projects, and any companies expanding fossil fuels. Demonstrate yearly reductions in fossil financing in line with minimizing climate harms and limiting global warming to well below 1.5°C.
- End financing for any projects or companies that violate human rights. End financing for any projects that place undue burdens on BIPOC communities, or fail to respect Indigenous or other frontline communities’ sovereignty.
- Uphold Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) as articulated in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and the right to self-determination of all peoples.
- Scale up financing for a just and fair transition. Rapidly increase financing for renewables, and other climate solutions by a factor of ten. Increase the ratio of financing for renewables to fossil fuels to 4:1. Immediately remove barriers to financing for local renewable energy projects that uplift marginalized and impacted communities.
