The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) is the “Official Ticket Access Partner” for Taylor’s Eras Tour stops in Vancouver and Toronto. RBC is also one of the biggest funders of fossil fuels around the world, financing 256.46 billion USD in fossil fuels since the Paris Climate Agreement in 2016.
Many of these projects are built in the territories of Indigenous nations without their consent! They threaten to pollute the land and water that these nations rely on, and that are integral to their cultures and ways of being. This includes the Coastal GasLink Pipeline (CGL), which has been forced through the pristine forests of the Yintah (Wet’suwet’en territory), and disrupted the salmon runs in Wedzin Kwa (the river that flows through the territory).
As RBC faces increased pressure from Indigenous peoples, environmental organizations, artists, and thousands of people just like you, they think they can use partnerships, like this one with Taylor Swift, to clean up their public image. But we know that band-aids don’t fix bullet holes. RBC is using Taylor Swift to distract young people while continuing to fund projects like CGL that violate Indigenous rights and contribute to climate chaos. And when you are young, they assume you know nothing, so let’s show RBC that Swifties know all about their dirty work, and we are watching!
